Did You Know?
- Bishop Hamilton Montessori School was established in 1983.
- Our school was named after the first Anglican Bishop of Ottawa, the Right Reverend Charles Hamilton.
- Bishop Hamilton Montessori School is one of only three CCMA accredited schools in the Ottawa area.
- Our school motto is “Where mind and spirit go hand in hand.”

Why Montessori?
Montessori is child-centred form of education that helps students cultivate a love for learning.
The Montessori Method was developed by Dr. Maria Montessori in the early 1900s. She believed children learn better when they get to choose what to learn. Here at Bishop Hamilton Montessori School, her philosophy is alive and well.
Learning as a Life Skill
A Montessori environment focuses more on learning than teaching. Specially trained Montessori teachers guide, coach, and facilitate learning through continuous observation and assessment.
The Montessori Approach allows children to learn at their own pace. That means fast learners are not held back and slower learners are not frustrated by their inability to keep up.
Mixed Age Classes
The Montessori class has mixed ages creating a family-like setting where learning can take place naturally. The dynamic of multi-ages recognizes learning as a social process. Students learn the importance of cooperation, respect, and collaboration not competition. Meanwhile mentorship reinforces their learning.
Acceptance & Trust
In Montessori classrooms, students learn skills to care for themselves, their environment, and their community. There are activities to develop spoken and written language, reading, mathematics and the natural sciences, as well as music, art, storytelling, movement and drama. Creativity flourishes in an atmosphere of acceptance and trust.
